Fish Lips

This sculpture reimagines the mermaid with a provocative twist. It comments on the duality many women face: to be both desirable and fertile, mythical and alluring. The mermaid is a classic fantasy for many, as is the dream of a wife who can provide children for you. The compromised result is Fish Lips: a mermaid who can provide. The sculpture is unappealing, yet beautiful, almost hard to look at. Nevertheless, she is what you wanted.

Fish Lips is a blown and sculpted glass art piece I made for my BFA solo exhibition at San Jose State University. To me, it is a testament of not only my journey in glassblowing, but the overall struggle throughout my career to find a medium that truly resonated with me. The connection I felt for glass as an art medium was strong, however, being able to bring an idea to life was truly an amazing experience. This piece solidified my determination to continue making glass art because being able to bring my drawings to life is important to me in my art.
